Senior General Civil Litigation Attorney

General Description and Classification Standards

The City of Atlanta Department of Law is seeking qualified applicants for a Senior Assistant City Attorney position within the Litigation Practice Group. The Litigation Practice Group is a defense-oriented practice that represents the City of Atlanta and its employees in matters pending in both the federal and the state court systems. The Practice Group also handles administrative investigations.  Senior General Civil Litigation Attorney

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

The ideal candidate should have at least five (5) years of litigation experience in general civil and/or employment litigation in state and federal courts, including appellate work. The applicant should be capable of handling all stages of litigation including discovery, depositions and alternative dispute resolution. Applicants must have experience managing paralegals and/or administrative staff. Experience drafting legislation is a plus. The ideal candidate should have substantial first and/or second chair trial experience and experience working with Assistant and Associate Attorneys. The Senior Assistant City Attorney in this position, will report directly to the Deputy City Attorney for Litigation, and will have extensive contact with Atlanta City Council, multiple City Departments and the governing bodies of several other municipalities.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Prior experience representing a municipal or other local government is not required. Applicants should demonstrate superior writing skills, outstanding judgment, excellent analytical skills and strong negotiation skills. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are also required. Applicants must be capable of working independently and require limited supervision.

Minimum Qualifications – Education and Experience

Applicants must possess a Juris Doctorate degree and be a member in good standing of the State Bar of Georgia. Qualified candidates must pass a background check. All applicants must possess the highest professional ethics and integrity.
