Nursing Services Dir, Corrections

General Description and Classification Standards

Manages oversees operations of health care resources and the detainee clinic within the corrections department. Supervises one or more registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, pharmacy technicians, imaging technicians, and/or medical assistants. Works closely with senior medical doctor (employee or contractor) to carry out detainee medical screening, administration of medications, and immediate care of injury or illness. Direction received is general and focuses more on long-term and short-term operating objectives, managerial effectiveness, and operating results.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Conducts inspections of facility and equipment to ensure compliance with regulations, codes and standards; verifies and audits records, timesheets, logs, and documentation completed by all agency staff.

Supervises, directs and evaluates assigned staff, handling employee concerns and problems directing work, counseling, disciplining and completing employee performance appraisals.

Prepares, approves and oversees proper methods of documentation and records preservation of all patient care; oversees and manages the day to day duties of the Medical Records staff and department.

Guides and trains subordinates on health services programs and on proper procedures and protocol of the department; establishes goals for employees on a regular basis.

Responds to Emergency medical needs of inmates and staff. Works as an RN in the various medical unit areas such as intake, clinic, passing medications on the floors, and sick call.

Interviews, evaluates and assesses new nursing applicants. Administers and monitors expenditures to ensure compliance with approved budget.

Decision Making

Establishes work methods, timetables, performance standards, etc.; may recommend policy or strategy changes; modifies organization to achieve objectives.

Leadership Provided

Has managerial authority over a group of professional, technical, or administrative employees engaged in the medical unit/medical records unit.

Minimum Qualifications – Education and Experience

Minimum education required to obtain licensure as a registered nurse in Georgia.

5 years of nursing experience with at lease two years as supervisory or charge nurse.

Preferred Education & Experience

BS in Nursing and experience in clinic supervision of a correctional institution or other confinement

Licensures and Certifications

Registered Nurse in Georgia.
